Earth Day - 6 Outdoor Activities

As a child, I remember being outside playing with friends and exploring what nature had to offer. Earth Day will soon be here and I want to share some fun outdoor activities so your students can explore and appreciate their surroundings. Spring is a wonderful time to take your students outside to observe insects, flowers, etc. and learn what they can do to "Save Our Earth."

In this blog post, I've provided 6 different outdoor activities for Earth Day.

1. Take your students on a bug hunt.

Give your students magnifying glasses so they can look for bugs and observe their findings. Then, students can continue their research about different insects. This is free at my TPT store.

2. Nature scavenger hunt

Divide your class into groups. Give each group a paper sack with a list of items to find in nature. After the a certain time, students can come back to share their findings. They love this activity. Give the winners something that represents Earth Day.

3. Digital Nature Walk

We have the Lady Bird Wildflower Center nearby, so we take our students to their trails. This activity can be done outside your school, too. Students can use digital cameras and take pictures of items in nature. Return to the classroom and put these into a PowerPoint slideshow. Or, if you use iPads, students can use different apps to showcase their findings. Ask your students to give examples of colors, textures, shapes and uniqueness.

4. Write sensory poems

After taking a walk outside, students can record as many descriptive words as they can about nature. Return to the classroom and write sensory poems.

5. Make a Bird Feeder

This is a great activity for Earth Day and Mother's Day. Make a bird feeder out of seeds and unflavored gelatin. Just use different shapes of cookie cutters to create your designs. They are so special and look so sweet when they are tied on a tree at your home.

6. Buggy Snacks

These can be made at the end of your Earth Day Unit.
